Any guesses as to what this sound is? (Update: Not a rock apparently)

Update: Took it to the shop for an oil change and to get a professional opinion on the noise . Their initial impression was the same as yours, that it was probably a rock between the brake and the backing plate. However, when the pulled the splash guard off the bottom to change the oil, they found the crank pulley nut sitting on it, and said it looked like it had worked its way off and rubbed against something. The good news is they got that reinstalled and torqued down properly, and checked the accessory and timing belts and didn’t see any damage from them having a bit too much freedom.

Original post:

Scraping starting around 0:03.

(Caution: may be a little loud, the dashcam didn’t pick it up too well, so I boosted it, but there is a bunch of background noise as well)

Oil is low, but there. Don’t think I was on the brakes, since I was going uphill. This is the only time I’ve heard it.

when does it happen? is it only when you turn? only when you brake?

check to see if you have some shit stuck between the brake shroud and the disc

Just this one time. Other turns haven’t been an issue, though the only left turn I’ve made since then was a very gentle one. As I said, I don’t think I was on the brake, though the pavement was pretty torn up there so I might have been trying to go slow for that.

Obviously I’d like for it to just be something stuck in the brake.

last time I heard a noise like that on my Ranger was when the wheel bearing finally dried out.

before that, I had one of the shoes for the parking brake separate and was dragging; my truck’s parking brake is the stupid little drum inside the rear rotor design.

Sounds like a rock stuck in the brakes to me.

That was my thoroughly uneducated guess.

Interesting. Only experience with wheel bearing noise I’ve had was more of a wind sound. The fact it hasn’t recurred (yet at least), makes me hopeful that’s not what it is.

I’m pretty sure Volvo uses the rear discs for the parking brake rather than having a mini drum.

I hope so. That road was sort of disintegrating, so I suppose it’s not impossible something managed to bounce up and get stuck.

I had the moaning sound too, but near as I can tell it failed from contamination and the grease getting out.  once it was dry it would squeak intermittently.

Sword on a grind stone?

EDIT: Plot twist. New video emerges. Camera pans to the back and shows driver spinning grind stone and sharpening sword.

I win billions for  guessing correctly. Everyone on oppo gets Toyota GT2000

Well now I’ve got an idea for a terrible As Seen On TV invention to sharpen your knives as you drive.

Sooo... more or less... I was right. There was a grind stone... it was sharpening sword (read crank pulley nut)

Good news. I win billions for guessing correctly.

Bad news. Everone on Oppo will have to wait for their Toyota GT2000s until check clears.
